The Taieri Gorge Limited train is Dunedin's prestige tourist train operating from the historic Railway Station.

Departing daily (except Christmas day) it takes you on a journey through the rugged and spectacular Taieri River Gorge, across wrought iron viaducts and through tunnels carved by hand more than 100 years ago.

With full commentary, photographic stops and on board refreshments the train offers year round, all-weather entertainment.

Make the most of your time and see more of Dunedin!

Get to know Dunedin's 'other side' - Taieri Gorge Railway stretches 77km, right across our richly varied city. Experience the parts that can never be seen by road! You'll wonder at the forgotten hardships and achievements of our early pioneers.

All Weather Enjoyment!

Rainy days add a special magic to the Gorge, as the waterfalls, tributary streams and the Taieri River come into their full glory.

Unique Features

Spectacular and ever-changing scenery which can only be accessed by train. Natural and human history of the area explained with informative commentary; written translations of highlights available in Japanese, German and Mandarin. Grand examples of Victorian stonework on bridges and tunnels and iron latticework viaducts (built 1880s). Passengers may disembark several times at points of interest.

Train departs and returns in the town centre at Dunedin's historic Edwardian railway station (built 1904-1907).

Carriages

Seats are allocated in either:

Modern carriages, with air conditioning, tables and panoramic windows.

Traditional character carriages (1915 - 1925), with opening windows, single and couple seating, and seats facing the direction of travel.

If booking prior to the day of travel it may be possible to ask for a particular carriage style.

Light foods, wines, ales and spirits, hot or cold beverages and souvenirs are available from the snack bar car. Set menu meals may be pre-ordered by groups. There is normally wheelchair access to one carridge and toilet on the train - please reserve in advance.

The Line

The line is part of the now-closed Otago Central Railway of the New Zealand Government Railways (now Tranz Rail), which ran from Wingatui to Cromwell. Tranz Rail Ltd have retained the first 4km of the line from Wingatui as the Taieri Branch to serve local industry and the Taieri Gorge Railway owns the 60kms of line from the 4km to Middlemarch at 64km.
