This journey takes you between the harbour cities of Auckland and Wellington. Travel through the lush farmland of the Waikato, the hill farms of the King Country, up the Raurimu Spiral onto the 'volcanic plateau' and native bush.

See the volcanic peaks of Mount Ruapehu, Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro, the dramatic white cliffs and viaducts of the Rangitikei River and views of Kapiti Island while heading to Wellington.

The northbound TranzCoastal from Christchurch to Picton, arrives in time to connect with the 1.30pm sailing of The Interislander ferry to Wellington and the North Island.

Heading south you travel through grape country, plains and river valleys. For over 100 kilometres it runs along a thin ledge of land pinned between the Pacific Ocean and the rugged Kaikoura ranges.

Next it's onto the lush farmland of North Canterbury, across the braided Waimakariri river and then through the suburban gardens of Christchurch.

The Kingston Flyer is made up of two steam locomotives and seven wooden carriages, seating 226 passengers.

It features a turn of the century buffet carriage and an authentically restored 1898 'birdcage' compartment carriage, with luxurious leather upholstered seats.

The Kingston Flyer can be hired for special celebrations.

Taieri Gorge Railway

Dunedin

The Taieri Gorge Limited train is Dunedin's prestige tourist train operating from the historic Dunedin Railway Station.

Departing daily (except Christmas day) it takes you on a journey through the rugged and spectacular Taieri River Gorge, across wrought iron viaducts and through tunnels carved by hand more than 100 years ago.
