24 hours from the time of pickup. Hires must start and finish in the location as per the contract agreement - should you wish to change your drop off location once the hire has proceeded a relocation charge may apply.

During the 20th Dec until the 3rd Jan a minimum rental period will apply.

Where a booking is cancelled once it has been confirmed by deposit or full payment, a cancellation fee will apply - per booking. No refunds for hires shortened once they have commenced. If a booking has been confirmed by way of a deposit and you are a 'no show' and have not notified us in writing at least 24 hours prior to pickup of your intention to cancel we reserve the right to charge you atleast 3 days rental.

One amendment per booking is allowed. Further amendments will incur an admin charge.

Full comprehensive insurance is mandatory in New Zealand and is included in our rates. This insurance covers the hirer for damage to the hire vehicle and any third party. The hirer is liable for the EXCESS if the car is damaged or involved in an accident.

The standard security of a credit card imprint will be held for this excess and returned on completion of the hire in accordance with the rental agreement. Where there is NO credit card imprint a security of cash or travellers cheques to the value of the liability is held.

The customer can purchase optional insurance at the counter at time of rental. This reduces the liability amount EXCESS if the customer damages the vehicle or is involved in an accident.

A deposit is required to secure a booking, balance of payment is required on commencement of the hire. All major credit cards accepted - alternative arrangements can be made for those without credit cards.

Drivers must be over the age of 21 and hold a full driver's license when renting a car, minibus or 4WD. If you are aged between 21 - 25 years, an under-age surcharge may apply.

Now compulsory in New Zealand for children under 5 years. Please advise child's age so the correct size seat is fitted. There is a one-off fee payable per seat, per hire.

Ski racks and chains are available from South Island branches during the winter months. North Island by request. Please book at time of reservation. A one-off fee per hire applies. A chain bond is required for chains used in the ski season. This is fully refundable on the undamaged return of the chains.

One way hires are permitted. Cars will have to be exchanged at the ferry terminal. A minimum hire on each island applies.


NZ consists of two separate main islands - the North Island and the South Island. Within this framework Budget Rent A Car operates a separate car fleet for each of these islands. As many of our customers would like to experience both the North and South Islands, we have instituted a special rental system called a 'Multi-Island Hire' rental. What this does is create one continuous rental (at one rate) for the customer even though the renter will be having two separate cars – e.g. one rental car in the North Island and another rental car in the South Island.

This means that you do not have to pay for the car to cross on the ferry, and it provides you with the flexibility to fly into Budget locations between the islands. To be able to do a Multi-Island Hire there are some general requirements that need to be met:

• A minimum rental of 3 days required in each Island (i.e. a min total rental of 6 days in both islands)
• If this requirement is not met, then the rental will be charged as 2 separate hires
• If you are travelling more than once between the two islands (e.g. begins the rental in the North Island, travels to the South Island and then re-crosses back into the North Island to finish the rental), this third rental period has no minimum rental requirement. This rental can be of any length so long as the first two rental periods meets the minimum requirements
• If the minimum rental requirements are met, the rental can start and finish at any Budget location in NZ (subject to vehicle availability)
• You can cross between the 2 islands using the Picton Ferry Terminal and the Wellington Ferry Terminal, or you can fly into other Budget locations. Note: This policy only applies if you are travelling to the other island, not to a location within the same island
• A maximum of 5 hours is allowed between the drop off of the vehicle in one island and the pick up of the next vehicle (i.e. the length of the ferry trip between the islands is approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes in total)
• A minimum of 48 hours notice is required of the customers’ intention to cross between the islands if a crossover booking has not be previously made. If notice is not given, we cannot guarantee a vehicle will be available on the other side
• Please note that no Budget vehicle is allowed to cross the Cook Strait between the islands. If you take a vehicle between the islands and leave the vehicle on the other side without Budget authorisation a relocation fee will apply

Parking tickets are the responsibility of the renter. An administration fee will be applied to process any infringements.

There are no driving restrictions applicable for remote locations, which would jepardise insurance claims, as long as the renter uses the vehicle within the terms of the rental agreement.

Please note your are not permitted to drive on the following roads. There is no insurance cover for any damage to the vehicle driven on these roads, regardless whether you have purchased Excess Reduction Insurance (ER) or not.

Tasman Valley Road
This road runs from Mount Cook Village to the Blue Lakes. It is unsealed and prone to avalanches. You may drive to Mount Cook Village (The Hermitage) but no further.

Caitlins Area
This road runs between Tokanui and Owaka (Southern Senic Route through the Cailtins area in the very south eastern corner of the South Island). For a 25km stretch on the road exists an unsealed section - in recent times has seen a high incidence of accidents.

Skippers Road
A very dangerous narrow mountain road near Queenstown. There is a sign at the enterance to this road stating that ther is no insurance cover for rental cars.
