Avis Cares
Avis Cares sums up Avis philosophy about our customers, employees, and communities in which we operate.
More specifically, the Avis Cares Programme is a driver safety and preparation program designed to ensure that Avis customers have a safe and stress-free trip to their destination. Components of the Avis Cares Programme include:
Emergency Road Service
Avis provides 24 hour a day roadside assistance.
Daily Rate
Most Avis rates are based on a 24-hour rental period and have a one-day minimum charge even if the
car is returned in less than 24 hours. For rentals over each 24-hour period an hourly rate equal to
one third of the daily rate applies until such hourly rate reaches the additional day rate at which
point the additional day rate applies. Charges for optional services (such as Excess Reduction)
are charged at the full day rate for each partial day.
Hourly Rate
In most cases the minimum rental charge is for one day and is based on a 24-hour period. Beyond the
24-hour period an hourly rate, equal to one third of the daily rate, applies until it equals the cost
of the additional day rate.
Mini-Lease
Avis offers special monthly rates for rentals of 60 days or more.
Monthly Rate
Avis offers special monthly rates for rentals from 28 to 59 days. These rates generally include a
substantial free mileage allowance.
Driving Regulations
The minimum age to rent an Avis vehicle in New Zealand is 21. A surcharge may apply to renters aged
21-24 years. Age Exceptions may occur where they are part of a separate contractual agreement with Avis.
Additional Drivers
The following individuals, if 21 years of age or older and in possession of a valid driver’s licence
may drive the car with the renter’s prior permission: Renter's employer (while on company business)
Renter's fellow employee (while on company business).
The above additional drivers are considered 'authorised drivers' and need not be present at the time of rental nor do they need to sign an additional driver form provided the rental agreement is stamped 'Authorised Company Driver'. Other individuals may be listed as additional drivers provided they are at least 21 years of age, present a valid driver's licence and complete an additional driver form. Please note, drivers under 25 years of age may be required to pay a young driver surcharge for leisure rentals. Drivers Licence
A valid driver's licence must have been held by the renter for a minimum of one year. Learners or
provisional licences are not acceptable. An international driving permit must be presented in
conjunction with any licence in non-roman alphabet. All drivers must meet Avis requirements.
Individuals with learner's permits may not operate Avis vehicles. Each operator of the Avis vehicle must be a licenced driver with a valid driver's license in his/her possession at all times while operating the Avis vehicle. All renters and additional drivers must present their valid licence at the time of rental. A temporary driver's licence is acceptable provided it does not have any restrictions and is valid for the entire period of the rental. Avis is unable to rent a car to anyone with a suspended, revoked, expired, cancelled or surrendered driver's licence. Parking Tickets / Traffic Violations
Parking tickets are the responsibility of the renter.
One Way Rentals
Avis offers convenient one way rentals at attractive rates. Pick up a car at one location and
return it to another. Car type and availability vary by participating locations, but generally
includes compact through full size cars with unlimited miles and no drop off fee for rentals over
three days.
Airport & Wharf Fees
In addition to time and mileage charges and taxes, an airport/wharf fee may apply to rentals
commencing from or terminating at airport and/or wharf locations.
An Airport Concession Recovery Fee will apply for all hires commencing or terminating at an Avis NZ Airport or Ferry location. This fee is payable directly to Avis at the time of rental. Remote Location Surcharge
A surcharge applies to all rentals commencing at these locations: Greymouth,
Hokitika, Westport and Gisborne.
Black-out Periods
During peak periods of demand certain rates or car groups at certain locations may not be available
for reservation or rental.
Peak Season Surcharge
A surcharge will apply to all rentals commencing the month of Feburary.
Cancellations
As a courtesy to fellow customers kindly cancel any reservation you will not need as soon as your
plans change. In certain cases and with certain rates or car groups, a cancellation fee may
apply if an unwanted reservation is not cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the reserved pick-up
time or if the customer fails to pick the vehicle up.
To avoid this fee, please cancel at least 48 hours in advance. Multi Island Hire Procedure
New Zealand consists of two main islands (the North Island and the South Island) where Avis New Zealand
operates a separate car fleet in each of these islands. As the majority of our leisure renters wish
to travel to both the North and South Islands, we have instituted a special rental system called a
'Multi-Island Hire' rental. What this does is create one continuous rental (at one rate) for the
renter, even though the renter will be having two separate cars - e.g one rental car in the North
Island and another rental car in the South Island.
To be eligible for this type of hire, there are some general requirements that need to be met before the rental can proceed: A minimum of 3 days required in each Island (ie. a minimum total rental of 6 days in both islands). If you cannot meet this requirement, then the rental will be charged as 2 separate hires at 2 separate rates. If you are travelling more than once between the two islands (eg. start the rental in the North Island, travel to the South Island and then re-cross back into the North Island to finish the rental), this third rental period has no minimum rental requirement. This rental can be of any length so long as the first two rental periods meets the minimum requirements. If the minimum rental requirements are met, the rental can start and finish at any Avis location in New Zealand (subject to availability). Renters must cross between the 2 islands using the Picton Ferry Terminal and the Wellington Ferry Terminal, OR flying between Rotorua and Christchurch. A maximum of 5 hours is allowed between the drop off of the vehicle in one island and the pick up of the next vehicle (ie. the length of the ferry trip between the islands is approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes in total). If a cross over booking has not been made, then we require 72 hours notice of the customers' intention to cross between the islands. If notice is not given, we cannot guarantee a vechicle will be available on the other side. It is important to note that no Avis vehicle is allowed to cross Cook Strait between the islands. Any client that does take a vehicle across on the Inter-islander ferry will not be covered by insurance for any damage occurred to the vehicle. If they collect a car in one island and leave the vehicle in the other island location without Avis authorisation, they will face an automatic relocation fee. Exceptions: For the Mini-bus/PMV - 8 seater, Tourer 4WD Wagon, Tourer 4WD Wagon, the minimum rental requirement is 5 days in each island (ie. a minimum total rental of 10 days in both islands). Upgrades / Rental Extensions
A renter decides to upgrage at the time of rental, the charge will be at local applicable rates.
This service is available for renters who decide at the time of rental to use the vehicle for a longer
period than reserved. Additional hours will be charged a 1/3 of the daily rate to a maximum of 3 hours when
an additional day will be charged.
Reserved Car Group
Avis guarantees the reserved car group. If it is not available at time of rental a higher car group will
be substituted at the confirmed rate.
Voluntry extention of rentals notified to Avis at the time of rental will be charged at local applicable rates. Unauthorized Drop Charge
A fee may be charged if the vehicle is returned to a rental location other than the one stated as the
return location on the rental agreement.
Insurance Excess
In the case of damage to the vehicle the renter is liable for an insurance excess.
This is required as a bond and preferably paid by creditcard although cash is also accepted. Excess Reduction (ER)
Avis offers a fee to reduce the Insurance Excess at many locations. This fee is a daily rate and is
subject to GST.
The excess amount can be reduced by purchasing Excess Reduction (ER) at commencement of the rental, either seperately or as part of an insurance protection package. Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) & Motor Vehicle Insurance (MVI)
LDW/MVI is compulsory in New Zealand and is included in most rates. The renter is liable for all loss
or damage to the Avis car or third party property in case of collision, vandalism, or any other cause.
The hirer and authorised driver are indemnified to the extent of a pre-determined amount in respect of any liability he or she might have for damage to any property belonging to any other person and arising out of use of the vehicle. The renter is also liable for loss of use of the vehicles (revenue lost while the car is being repaired). LDW/MVI relieves them of financial responsibility for loss or damage to the Avis car or third party property as long as they comply with the terms of the Avis rental agreement. This excludes any applicable excesses. Cost of LDW/MVI will vary by location, car group and rate. Full details of liability and insurance cover including Exclusions are detailed in the rental agreement. Optional Coverage
Avis, where permitted, offers optional coverage for personal accident insurance, personal effects
and baggage insurance and excess reduction.
Optional Protection Package
The Avis Protection Package is an optional all-inclusive package that gives you coverage for
things like damage to the Avis car, your personal belongings and injury to you. This includes Personal
Accident Insurance (PAI), Personal Effects and Baggage (PEB) and Excess Reduction (ER). By taking the
package option you can save by paying less than what you would normally pay if you were to buy all
three insurance options separately.
This includes Excess Reduction Insurance (ER), Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) and Personal Effects & Baggage Insurance (PEB) Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) In New Zealand, PAI provides the authorised driver with cover up to a certain limit for death or disablement cover and in certain conditions, medical expenses. Personal Effects & Baggage (PEB) In New Zealand, PEB provides the renter, authorised drivers and immediate members of the renter’s family who are dependants with a cover up to a certain limit for loss or damage to baggage and personal effects. Special Equipment
Ski racks or snowboard racks and snow chains are available from select locations. This equipment
varies by location.
Avis has child safety seats for toddlers available upon request from most Avis locations in New Zealand. Seats must be requested at the time of reservation. Avis provides vehicles equipped with hand controls on a request basis. Requests must be made at least 2 weeks in advance of the rental period. There will be a charge for hand controls if the duration of the rental is fewer than 7 days. Restrictions
There are no driving restrictions applicable for remote locations, which would jepardise insurance claims, as long as
the renter uses the vehicle within the terms of the rental agreement.
Dangerous Roads
Please note your are not permitted to drive on the following roads. There is no insurance cover
for any damage to the vehicle driven on these roads, regardless whether you have purchased Excess Reduction Insurance (ER)
or not.
Tasman Valley Road This road runs from Mount Cook Village to the Blue Lakes. It is unsealed and prone to avalanches. You may drive to Mount Cook Village (The Hermitage) but no further. There is a sign at the enterance to this road stating that ther is no insurance cover for rental cars. 90 Mile Beach Northland. Late Arrivals
